What 7-Zip can do

7-Zip creates and extracts 7z, XZ, BZIP2, GZIP, TAR, ZIP and WIM archives. It can also extract many additional formats such as RAR, ISO, DMG, VHD and VMDK. The Windows build includes a file manager, shell integration and command-line tools; LZMA and LZMA2 provide the main 7z compression methods.

Encryption and recovery boundaries

7z and ZIP support AES-256 encryption. The real protection still depends on a long unique password, whether file names are encrypted, and how the password and archive are stored. A forgotten archive password normally has no recovery path, so keep an independent recovery plan and checksum with important archives.

Safe handling of unfamiliar archives

An archive can contain executables, scripts, shortcuts, misleading extensions or paths that overwrite existing files. Inspect its file list first, extract it into a new isolated directory, and scan the result before opening anything. Check the declared size and available disk space because a compressed archive can expand far beyond its download size.

Start with a disposable test directory. Create, test and extract a normal archive before trying encryption, and never unpack an unfamiliar archive directly into a desktop or system directory.

Before you start

  • Prepare a test directory containing non-sensitive sample files and keep an independent checksum for the originals.

What should I do when the archive test fails?

Make a copy of the original archive, then verify its checksum, all volumes and the password. Do not repeatedly extract over the same destination.

Why can another person not open the encrypted archive?

Check support for the selected format, AES method and file-name encryption. Test a small sample with the recipient's tool instead of weakening the password.
