Chatbox
A cross-platform AI conversation client for Chatbox services, OpenAI, Claude, Gemini, Ollama and compatible endpoints, with conversation and prompt management.
What Chatbox is for
Chatbox provides one interface for multiple model providers, compatible APIs and local models. It supports conversations, Markdown, prompt organization and attachments across desktop and mobile platforms. The client is only the entry point; model quality, context, cost and data handling depend on the provider selected for each connection.
Keep accounts and API credentials separate
A web-chat subscription, a Chatbox service account, a third-party API key and a local model are different ways to connect. A model name shown in the interface does not prove which endpoint is used. When setting up a provider, record the base address, model ID, permission scope, timeout and cost boundary.
Treat conversations and configuration as data
Conversations, prompts, attachments, history and exported settings may contain sensitive information. Before enabling sync or a plugin, inspect what is sent, where it is stored and how deletion works. A local model is local only when the endpoint and related extensions remain local.

Chatbox installation and first model connection
Install the matching client, choose one provider, send a non-sensitive test prompt and verify the model, endpoint and data settings before importing real work.
Before you start
- Choose the correct Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS or Android package and distinguish processor architectures on desktop.
- Decide whether to use Chatbox services, a provider API key or a local model, and review the associated cost and privacy terms.
- Keep passwords, identity documents, customer data and unpublished code out of the first test conversation.
Installation steps
- 01
Install the matching platform client
Install and launch the package normally, checking the processor architecture and local configuration directory on first run.
- 02
Select one provider mode
Choose Chatbox service, a third-party API or a local endpoint explicitly, and never put credentials from different providers into one setting.
- 03
Save the smallest credential
Configure only the key and endpoint needed for the current test, with a reasonable timeout and quota. Shared devices should not retain long-lived high-privilege keys.
Quick start
- 01
Send a safe test conversation
Choose the configured model, send a simple prompt and confirm the response, model ID and usage record match the selected provider.
- 02
Check context and network behavior
Test a new conversation, history and a sample attachment while checking which content is sent. A client does not automatically give every model live web access.
- 03
Configure export and cleanup
Export a test conversation, inspect the format and review history, sync and deletion settings before adding real data.
Usage tips
- The displayed model name is not the same as the actual endpoint; troubleshoot the provider, base address and model ID together.
- A local model is local only when the service address, plugins and synchronization remain local and do not forward content elsewhere.
- Inspect imported prompt or configuration files for remote endpoints, system instructions and embedded credentials.
Troubleshooting and uninstall
Why does a provider return 401, 403 or model-not-found?
Check the key owner, project permission, balance, model access, base address and model ID. A web-chat subscription does not automatically grant API access.
Why cannot Chatbox connect to a local model?
Confirm the local process and model are running, then check the port, base address, firewall and container network. Keep an unauthenticated test endpoint local.
- Export required conversationsSave only the conversations and prompts that should be retained, sign out and remove API keys, then confirm whether sync still holds a copy.
- Remove the client and local configurationUninstall through the operating system and clear cache, history and credentials only after checking the local model service and backups separately.
Frequently asked questions
Can a ChatGPT Plus account be used as a Chatbox API key?
Web-chat subscriptions and API billing are usually separate products. The selected provider must grant the required API permission, or the client must use its own service mode.
Can Chatbox connect to Ollama?
It can connect to a local or compatible endpoint when the service is running, the model is available and the address is reachable. A proxy, container or firewall can still block it.
Does a local model guarantee that every conversation stays local?
No. Check the endpoint, plugins, attachments, synchronization and any cloud features before assuming that all content stays on the device.
