What Filen provides

Filen Desktop 3.0.53 combines client-side end-to-end encryption with configurable synchronization between local and cloud folders. Two-way sync, one-way transfer, local backup, cloud backup and a virtual drive serve different workflows, so the selected mode should be tested with disposable files before production data is connected.

Sync and recovery boundaries

Two-way synchronization can propagate moves, renames and deletions. Backup modes are designed for a more conservative flow, but they still require a tested restore path, local recovery information and an independent backup. Encryption protects data in transit and at rest, but it does not protect files already decrypted on a device or an active account session.

Virtual drive and maintenance

A virtual drive, WebDAV or S3 endpoint expands the set of applications and credentials that can reach cloud data. Install the build for the device architecture, secure the account, test each synchronization direction with an empty folder and only then decide whether a virtual drive, WebDAV or S3 endpoint belongs in the workflow.

Before you start

  • Confirm Windows, macOS or Linux support and the CPU architecture, then reserve space for encryption, cache and the local recycle bin.
  • Back up existing synchronization settings, unfinished transfers and recovery information before changing a client installation.

Usage tips

  • Two-way sync can propagate deletion; local and cloud backup modes are safer starting points when the source must remain authoritative.
  • Client-side encryption does not replace device encryption, two-step verification or offline recovery preparation.
  • Virtual drives, WebDAV and S3 should use separate credentials and controlled network exposure; avoid database and virtual-machine workloads on the mounted path.
Troubleshooting and uninstall

Why did a delete or rename appear on the other side?

Check the selected synchronization mode and pause the pair immediately. Compare both recycle bins and an independent backup before moving more files or changing the path.

Why does the virtual drive hang on a file?

Check whether the mount point is empty, whether the file is locked and whether the application is creating temporary files. Switch to read-only mode, lower concurrency and finish the transfer before unmounting.

Does end-to-end encryption let support recover a forgotten password?

Do not assume that it does. Recovery depends on available credentials, recovery information and client key state, so keep recovery material offline and use two-step verification.

Is a virtual drive suitable for a database?

It is better to keep databases and lock-heavy workloads local, then upload a controlled export or backup. A mounted cloud path can behave poorly when applications create temporary or persistent lock files.
