What GSmartControl provides

Reading health signals

A device-reported PASSED state is evidence, not a guarantee. Vendor attributes, thresholds and raw values differ, and interface errors may come from a cable, bridge or controller rather than the media. Compare reports over time and protect data before running a long test on a failing drive.

Platform and hardware boundaries

  • SMART trends are more useful than a single green status; compare attributes, logs, temperature and power-on history over time.
  • CRC errors can indicate a cable or controller problem, while media, pending-sector and uncorrectable errors deserve immediate data protection.
  • A saved smartctl report can be reviewed as read-only evidence without touching the original drive again.
Troubleshooting and uninstall

Why is no drive visible?

Confirm administrator or root access and check whether RAID, virtualization or a USB bridge hides the device. Record the connection path before changing hardware settings.

Why was the self-test interrupted?

Check sleep settings, USB power, cables and controller resets, save the current log and repeat only in a stable direct connection after protecting the data.

Frequently asked questions

Does PASSED mean the drive is completely safe?

No. It is one firmware signal and cannot rule out sudden failure, power issues, filesystem damage or deterioration below a threshold. Keep an independent backup.

Can an extended SMART test delete files?

A normal device self-test is a diagnostic operation, but it adds sustained I/O and runtime. When a unique data drive is already failing, recover data first instead of starting a long test.

Why does a USB drive show no SMART data?

Some bridges, enclosures and RAID controllers do not pass SMART commands or require a device-specific mode. Confirm hardware support rather than repeatedly writing to or opening the drive.
