Librera Reader
Librera Reader 9.4.21-fdroid is an open-source Android reader for PDF, EPUB, MOBI, DjVu, FB2, comic archives and other formats, with library scanning, annotations, text-to-speech and layout controls.
What Librera Reader does
Librera Reader is an Android reading application for PDF, EPUB, MOBI, DjVu, FB2, TXT, RTF, AZW, HTML and comic archive formats. It combines a local library with bookmarks, annotations, configurable layouts and optional text-to-speech.
FD and PRO distribution boundaries
The 9.4.21-fdroid build is compiled for the F-Droid channel and does not include Google Drive synchronization. Other distribution channels can have different signing keys and feature sets, so an APK from one channel may not replace another directly.
Library and storage scope
Choose a dedicated books directory instead of scanning shared storage broadly. Reading progress, thumbnails, text-to-speech data and exported settings may live in different locations; back up the state before changing devices or signatures.
Format and DRM limits
Format support does not bypass DRM or repair a damaged book. Large PDFs, complex EPUB styles and media playback can increase memory, battery and cache usage, especially on older Android devices.

Librera Reader installation and local library setup guide
Install the 9.4.21-fdroid APK from a consistent signing channel, select a dedicated books folder, test PDF and EPUB behavior, and back up reading state before a device migration.
Before you start
- Use Android 7.0 or later and reserve space for the application, book files, thumbnails and possible text-to-speech cache.
- Put test books in a dedicated folder and keep chat attachments, downloads and private application directories outside the first scan.
- Decide whether F-Droid or another channel will provide future updates; different signatures often prevent an in-place replacement.
Installation steps
- 01
Check the APK channel and signature
Verify the package name, 9.4.21-fdroid version and device architecture, then install through the chosen channel and turn off unknown-source permission after the test.
- 02
Limit the library scan
Grant access only to the selected Books folder, enable the formats you actually use and avoid a broad shared-storage scan.
- 03
Set reading and backup options
Choose the theme, page mode, font and brightness, then locate settings export, session backup and cache directories before importing the full library.
Quick start
- 01
Test a PDF and an EPUB
Open two DRM-free samples and check search, zoom, reflow, fonts and navigation. PDF and reflowable book settings differ, so test both separately.
- 02
Create a bookmark and annotation
Add a bookmark and a short annotation, close the application and reopen the book to confirm that progress and marks survive a restart.
- 03
Test text-to-speech and restore
Use a short non-sensitive chapter to check voice and speed, export the reading state to a separate directory and restore it only after backing up the current state.
Usage tips
- DRM-protected books require the permitted application or account that supplied them; file format support does not remove that restriction.
- Large PDFs, text-to-speech and media features increase battery, memory and cache use. Older devices may need lower preview quality or fewer background features.
- The F-Droid build does not include Google Drive synchronization. If files or exported progress are synchronized manually, avoid simultaneous edits on two devices.
Troubleshooting and uninstall
Why is a PDF slow or crashing?
Test a small copy first, then check whether the original is unusually large, damaged or built from complex layers. Reduce preview quality, close background applications and avoid repeatedly importing the same damaged file.
Why is an EPUB layout or font incorrect?
Reset the book-specific CSS, font and margin overrides. If only one title is affected, inspect its stylesheet or convert a copy while retaining the original file.
- Export reading state and back up booksSave bookmarks, annotations, settings and session data, then open a sample backup. Keep the book directory as a separate copy.
- Remove the app and selected cacheUninstall Librera Reader and remove thumbnails, text-to-speech recordings or cache only after checking that no reading state is still needed.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between Librera FD and Librera PRO?
The FD build is compiled for F-Droid and does not include Google Drive synchronization. PRO and other channels can use different signing keys and features, so back up progress before switching.
Can Librera Reader open every supported file type?
It handles many common document and comic formats, but DRM, damaged files, unusual layouts and missing fonts can still prevent correct rendering.
Why did the library scan find unrelated files?
The scan scope was probably too broad. Select a dedicated book folder and apply format filters instead of granting access to all shared storage.
