What MarkText does

MarkText is a desktop Markdown editor that combines a rendered writing view with source editing, math, Mermaid diagrams and focused writing modes. It is useful for local documents and attached assets rather than a hosted document database.

Candidate release boundaries

Version 0.20.0-rc.1 is a release candidate. It should be tested with representative Markdown, images, tables, code, formulas and diagrams before it becomes the only editor for important documents. Keep the original files and a known-good editor available during migration.

Files and attachments

Markdown remains the primary migration asset. Images and other attachments usually rely on relative paths, so moving only the Markdown file can leave blank previews. Keep a document directory with its attachments and check filename case on case-sensitive systems.

Rendering and publishing

Mermaid and math depend on the rendering environment. Preview and export in the target environment, check links and images, and keep the source text instead of treating a rendered view as the only copy.

GUIDE

MarkText 0.20.0 RC installation, writing and migration guide

Install the candidate release in a copy of the writing directory, verify Markdown, images, formulas and diagrams, then put the stable document directory under versioned backup.

Before you start

  • Select the Windows, macOS or Linux package and prepare a test document directory with an independent backup.
  • Copy important documents first and record the editor version, image layout and extensions used by the current workflow.
  • Include Chinese text, tables, code, formulas and images in the acceptance sample without replacing the only source file.
01

Installation steps

  1. 01

    Install the matching platform package

Use the Windows installer, the macOS package or the matching Linux package, then check file associations, language and read and write permissions on the first launch.

  2. 02

    Open a test directory

Open an independent folder, create a Markdown file and save it, then verify headings, lists, code blocks and non-ASCII text.

  3. 03

    Test rendering features

Check math, Mermaid, tables, block quotes and relative image paths one by one, recording any mismatch while retaining the original Markdown.

02

Quick start

  1. 01

    Choose an editing mode

Use WYSIWYG, source, focus or typewriter mode according to the task, and keep heading levels and file naming consistent in a long document.

  2. 02

    Manage images and attachments

Store images in a fixed directory near the document and use relative paths. Check references before moving the directory to another device.

  3. 03

    Export and re-open a copy

Copy Markdown, images and required configuration to a backup directory, reopen the copy and verify rendering, links and attachment paths.

Usage tips

  • The Markdown source and attachment directory are the key migration assets; the editor preview is not a substitute for either.
  • Keep a rollback copy that opens in the previous stable version before upgrading a candidate release.
  • Preview Mermaid and math in the target publishing environment because rendering dependencies can differ between systems.
Troubleshooting and uninstall

Why do images disappear after moving the document?

Check relative paths, filename case and whether the attachment directory moved with the Markdown file. Repair links on a copy before applying a batch change.

Why do formulas or diagrams appear as plain text?

Check syntax fences and the corresponding extension setting, then test a minimal sample. Keep the source and perform the final export in a known-good environment.

  1. Save source and attachmentsClose documents and copy Markdown, images, configuration notes and checksums to a separate directory, then reopen a long sample.
  2. Uninstall with a rollback copyRemove MarkText through system application management and clear cache only after confirming that the document directory and stable editor copy remain available.
FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is MarkText 0.20.0-rc.1 a final release?

It is a release candidate. Test rendering, images, formulas and diagrams on a copy before using it as the only editor for important writing.

What documents can MarkText open?

It is primarily a Markdown editor. Check encoding, relative image paths and attachment directories before importing or moving a document set.

Why does macOS show a security prompt during installation?

A candidate build may have different signing or notarization status. Verify the package source and checksum, then test it in a separate account or directory when uncertain.
