What MPC-HC does
MPC-HC is a lightweight Windows player for local audio and video, subtitles and playlists. It combines LAV Filters with MPC Video Renderer and can use hardware decoding for common SDR and HDR material, while the actual result still depends on the display chain, GPU, drivers and file format.
Renderer and HDR boundaries
Version 2.7.4 uses MPC Video Renderer by default on many modern systems and updates the bundled filters. Establish a baseline with a normal SDR sample before changing D3D11 decoding, HDR output, color management or external filters. Keep one change at a time so a black screen or color shift can be traced.
Subtitles, history and external components
Online subtitle search depends on a third-party service and daily quota; an HTTP 406 response is not necessarily a player defect. Playback history can reveal local file names and positions. yt-dlp, FFmpeg and other components should be added only when needed and checked separately for version and permission.
Content and platform boundaries
The player does not guarantee Blu-ray menus, encrypted discs, DRM-protected sites or every streaming service. Extra components do not grant access to protected content and should not be treated as a substitute for a content license.

- Version 2.7.4 provides x64 and x86 installer and portable packages and updates LAV Filters and MPC Video Renderer.
- The first run can detect the GPU and adjust rendering and decoding. A fresh baseline is more useful than copying every old filter setting.
- Subtitle services have their own quotas, and playback history can expose local paths. Configure or clear both according to the computer's privacy needs.
- Blu-ray menus, protected discs and DRM sites are outside what an ordinary local player can guarantee. External components do not change those content rights.
Troubleshooting and uninstall
Why did the update cause a black screen, color shift or higher CPU usage?
Restore the default output, disable external filters and shaders and compare an SDR file with hardware decoding off. Then check the renderer, D3D11 path, driver and display mode one at a time.
Why does the portable version not save settings or file associations?
Use a writable user directory and confirm that security software has not quarantined files. System-level associations are usually better suited to the installer; do not run the player as administrator all the time.

Why can HDR colors look wrong in MPC-HC 2.7.4?
HDR depends on MPC Video Renderer, the GPU, the operating system HDR mode, the display and the complete color path. Check those pieces before changing filters or installing a patch.
Is an OpenSubtitles 406 response a player error?
Not necessarily. A third-party subtitle service can exhaust its daily quota or require account handling. Retry later or use a local subtitle rather than installing an unknown quota workaround.
Can MPC-HC play every Blu-ray or streaming site?
No. Menus, encryption, DRM, login requirements and changing site interfaces impose separate limits. A local player and an optional downloader do not remove those boundaries.
