What Rescuezilla does
Rescuezilla runs from a bootable USB and provides a graphical workflow for creating, browsing and restoring disk images. It is useful when a desktop no longer starts, when a full disk needs to move to new hardware, or when a Clonezilla-compatible image needs a visual recovery path. It is an imaging tool rather than a continuous file-sync service.
Source, target and recovery boundaries
Writing the live image erases the selected USB. Restore and clone operations can overwrite the target disk, so the device must be confirmed by model, serial number and capacity instead of a drive letter alone. Keep an independent backup and perform a restore rehearsal on a disposable disk before treating an image as a disaster-recovery copy.

Write the ISO to a disposable USB, identify the source and backup disks in the live environment, create and check an image, then rehearse restoration only on a spare disk.
Before you start
- Prepare a USB that may be completely erased, an independent backup disk and a spare disk for restoration practice.
- Record each disk model, serial number and capacity, and disconnect unrelated removable disks before starting.
- Keep another copy of important data; a successfully created image is not proof that recovery will work.
Installation steps

Verify the ISO
Confirm the 64-bit image name and checksum before writing it. Do not use an incomplete image or an untrusted file.

Write the live USB
Select the ISO and the intended USB in an imaging tool, then verify the device again by model, serial number and capacity because the whole USB is erased.

Boot and identify disks
Start from USB and inspect the disk list before opening a backup or restore action. Stop if the source, backup or rehearsal target is not unambiguous.

Usage tips
- Recovery and cloning overwrite the target disk; review the source image, target model, serial number and capacity immediately before starting.
- RAID, LVM, encrypted disks, dynamic disks and hibernating operating systems require extra compatibility checks.
- If a disk shows physical failure symptoms, reduce writes and assess read-only imaging or professional recovery before repeated cloning.
Troubleshooting and uninstall
Why is the live environment black or missing a disk?
Check USB integrity, UEFI or legacy mode, Secure Boot, graphics compatibility and controller pass-through. Do not repartition a disk just because it is not visible.
Why does the restored disk not boot?
Compare partition-table type, EFI or boot partitions, boot mode and target size with the source, and troubleshoot on the spare disk rather than overwriting the original.
- Shut down and store the imageWait for all writes to finish, shut down normally, label the image and restore-test status, then store the backup in an independent location.
- Reuse the USBWhen the live disk is no longer needed, repartition and format the USB only after checking its model and capacity once more.
Frequently asked questions
Does Rescuezilla install into Windows?
It normally runs as a live system from USB and does not install into Windows. Creating the USB and restoring an image are separate operations with different overwrite risks.
Can Rescuezilla restore Clonezilla images?
Clonezilla compatibility is a core goal, but filesystem, compression and version combinations still need checking. Test a copy on a spare disk first.
Is the 2.6.2 image suitable for ARM computers?
The recommended image targets Intel or AMD 64-bit PCs. Do not boot an x86-64 ISO on an ARM device.
