What HandBrake provides

HandBrake 1.11.2 converts readable video sources into MP4, MKV or WebM while exposing resolution, frame rate, filters, video encoding, audio and subtitle choices. It is a transcoder rather than a multi-track editor: video is re-encoded, so it is not a lossless cut, direct-copy joiner or timeline editor.

Quality, speed and compatibility

Constant-quality scales and presets differ between encoders; a lower quality number commonly produces higher quality and a larger file, but the scales are not interchangeable. Hardware encoding can be much faster while producing different results at the same nominal setting. Test a short range on the actual playback device before queuing a large batch.

Source and maintenance boundaries

HandBrake does not bypass DRM or copy protection. Process only sources that can be read and that the user is entitled to handle, retain the original until output has been verified and keep encoding parameters with long-term media. Review date: 2026-08-23.

    Only after the sample passes should you add other files or titles, keep output names unique, confirm free space and retain sources until the batch is reviewed.

Usage tips

  • H.265 and AV1 can improve compression at lower bitrates but may encode more slowly and have weaker support on older devices; H.264 remains broadly compatible.
  • Hardware encoders change speed and quality behavior; compare a short sample rather than copying a software-encoder setting blindly.
  • Keep source files, encoding settings and output checksums together for media that must be archived or delivered.
Troubleshooting and uninstall

Why is the output larger or visibly worse?

Check the quality value, scaling, frame rate and preset, then return to a short sample and compare one encoder or quality change at a time.

Why are audio tracks or subtitles missing?

Check container support, audio passthrough, subtitle type and the target device. Test a more compatible H.264 and AAC combination when required.

Frequently asked questions

Can HandBrake losslessly cut or join videos?

No. It is a transcoder and re-encodes the video track. Use a lossless cutting tool or a non-linear editor for direct-copy cuts, joins and multi-track timelines.

Does a higher constant-quality number mean better quality?

Usually the opposite for many HandBrake encoders, but scales differ. Test a short sample and compare the output on the target device before batch encoding.

Can HandBrake process DRM-protected video?

No. It does not bypass copy protection or DRM. Use sources that are readable and that you are entitled to process.
