What Luminance HDR does

Luminance HDR combines multiple exposures of the same scene into a high dynamic range image. It supports alignment, ghost removal, RAW input, OpenEXR and TIFF workflows, tone mapping, batch processing and color-managed output.

Input and output boundaries

A stable sequence usually shares the same viewpoint, focus, white balance and lens settings. The HDR master can preserve a wider brightness range than a JPEG, while tone mapping compresses that range into an image for screens or print.

Version and package boundaries

Version 2.6.1.1 is an older stable tag with Windows, macOS and Linux package options such as AppImage, Flatpak and distribution packages. RAW compatibility depends on the LibRaw version used by the build, so test a representative camera file before a full project.

Storage and color management

Installation steps

    Choose the package for the system

    Use the Windows installer, macOS DMG or a verified Linux distribution package, Flatpak or AppImage; test this older 2.6.1.1 line on a copy before a production workflow.

Usage tips

  • The 2.6.1.1 tag is old, while code activity and third-party builds may differ. Do not treat an unverified development binary as the same stable package.
  • Tone mapping operators produce different contrast, halos, noise and saturation. Save presets and compare at 100 percent rather than relying on a thumbnail.
  • EXIF copying, color profiles and 16-bit output are separate checks; a similar-looking image does not prove that the expected bit depth or metadata survived.
Troubleshooting and uninstall

Why will a RAW file not open or show incorrect colors?

Check the LibRaw support of the selected build and try a supported TIFF or EXR intermediate while keeping the original RAW. Do not rename an extension or install an unknown decoder as a shortcut.

Why is tone mapping slow or using too much memory?

Reduce the number of inputs and preview size, close other memory-heavy applications and check temporary disk space. Tune parameters on a small copy before rendering the full-size master.

Frequently asked questions

How many photographs are needed for an HDR merge?

Two or more exposures of the same scene can work, and a stable sequence with different EV values usually gives more control. A single RAW can enter some tone mapping workflows but cannot recover detail the sensor never captured.

Why are there ghosts or double edges after merging?

Check viewpoint, focus and alignment, then use ghost removal on moving areas. If movement or parallax is too large, reduce the input set, mask the area manually or reshoot the sequence.

What is the difference between an HDR master and a tone-mapped JPEG?

The HDR master retains a wider brightness range for continued editing. Tone mapping compresses it into a standard display or print image, so retain both the master and the final export.
