What MediaInfo does

MediaInfo reads technical metadata from containers, video tracks, audio tracks, subtitles and chapters. It can export text, CSV, HTML and structured results, but it does not play or transcode media.

Container versus codec

A filename extension usually identifies a container rather than the actual video or audio codec. Check the container, Codec ID, profile, resolution, frame rate, bit depth, color, sample rate, channels and track flags together.

Version and platform boundaries

Version 26.05 has graphical, command-line and library options across Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS. Match architecture and package type, then standardize units, decimal display and report templates for team work.

Report and privacy boundaries

Installation steps

    Choose the interface and architecture

    Use the graphical application for inspection, the CLI for batch work and the matching x64 or ARM64 package for Windows, macOS or Linux; choose the mobile package only for the supported device.

    Establish a local analysis directory

    Analyze a local copy, disable integrations that are not needed and write automated reports to a private directory with minimal read permissions.

    Open the about panel and confirm 26.05, then standardize interface language, units, decimal display and export template for shared work.

Usage tips

  • Parsed metadata reflects declarations and decoder results; it does not prove that every frame will decode or play correctly.
  • Variable frame rate, variable bitrate and damaged timestamps can make simple averages misleading. Compare the report with a timeline and player log.
  • Pin output format and version in batch scripts, then validate a sample set after upgrades because field names and units can change.
Troubleshooting and uninstall

Why is a field empty even though the file plays?

The format may be partially supported, the header or index may be damaged, or the player may use a proprietary parser. Keep a complete copy, update MediaInfo and compare another parser.

Why does the application hang on an unknown file?

Keep the sample hash and a minimal reproduction, stop repeated high-privilege attempts and inspect the file in an isolated environment. Do not upload confidential media to a third party.

Frequently asked questions

Can MediaInfo play or convert video?

MediaInfo reads and reports technical parameters and tags. It is not a complete player or transcoder; use a separate tool for playback, compression or codec conversion.

Why is the bitrate different from the value shown by a player?

Applications can show overall, per-track, nominal or size-derived averages. Compare the same track, unit and calculation method before treating the values as contradictory.

Does a file extension prove the codec?

No. The extension generally identifies the container. Inspect the container, Codec ID and track configuration to identify the actual video, audio and subtitle streams.
