MeshLab
MeshLab 2025.07 is an open-source tool for large unstructured triangle meshes, point clouds and 3D scans, with cleaning, alignment, reconstruction, simplification, measurement and format conversion.
What MeshLab does
MeshLab processes triangle meshes, point clouds and scan data. It is useful for alignment, cleaning, reconstruction, simplification, measurement, texture handling, format conversion and print preparation rather than parametric solid CAD or assembly design.
Version and precision boundaries
Version 2025.07 is the regular release, while 2025.07d is a double-precision build for large coordinates or precision-sensitive tasks. Test the relevant build on a project copy and do not mix results from different precision modes over the only source data.
Topology and simplification
Filters can change topology, vertex order, normals, colors and UV coordinates. Reduce face count gradually on a copy, preserve boundaries and textures where needed and compare outlines, measurements and visual details before exporting.
Units and export
MeshLab does not infer the engineering unit or coordinate intent for you. Confirm units, axes, normals, color, UV and texture paths before exporting OBJ, PLY, STL or another format, then reopen the result in the target slicer, CAD tool or renderer.

MeshLab installation, mesh cleanup and simplification guide
Install the matching package, import a test mesh, inspect topology and normals, create staged cleanup and simplification copies and verify the exported file in the next tool.
Before you start
- Keep a read-only backup of scan data and prepare a small OBJ, PLY or STL test file.
- Match Windows x86_64, macOS Intel or Apple silicon, or Linux x86_64 or ARM64 to the selected package.
- Record model units, coordinate system, texture files and intended use before changing geometry.
Installation steps
- 01
Choose the regular or precision build
Start with 2025.07 for ordinary work and test 2025.07d separately when large coordinates or double precision are relevant. Use the matching EXE, ZIP, DMG or AppImage.
- 02
Open a sample mesh
Import a copy and inspect layers, vertex and face counts, bounding box, normals, textures and units before saving any change.
- 03
Create staged project copies
Keep original, cleaned, aligned, simplified and exported stages as separate files and record filter parameters because undo history is not a recovery plan.
Quick start
- 01
Inspect and clean topology
Check duplicate vertices, degenerate faces, small components and non-manifold elements, then process one class at a time while comparing face count and appearance.
- 02
Fix normals and simplify a copy
Unify only verified normal directions, reduce triangles gradually and preserve boundaries, normals and textures while checking silhouette and key measurements.
- 03
Export and verify downstream
Choose OBJ, PLY or STL according to the next tool, document units and included color, normals, UV and textures, then reopen the result in a slicer, CAD tool or renderer.
Usage tips
- Large scans consume memory and graphics resources quickly. Crop irrelevant areas or create a low-resolution copy before interactive processing.
- Record filter versions and parameters in research or engineering workflows because topology and vertex order can change.
- STL usually carries no texture and has limited unit semantics, so confirm the convention used by the downstream application.
Troubleshooting and uninstall
Why is the model invisible or the size wrong after import?
Check layer visibility, bounding box, camera reset, coordinate scale and units. A model far from the origin or at an extreme scale may need a documented transform on a copy.
Why did reconstruction or simplification crash?
Reduce the input, inspect non-manifold or damaged elements, close other memory-heavy applications and reproduce with staged copies while keeping the original and filter settings.
- Archive mesh, textures and parametersStore meshes, textures, project files, filter parameters and version notes together and check that another tool can read the export.
- Remove the application and cacheUninstall MeshLab and clear temporary meshes or shader cache only after confirming that no project still references an external texture directory.
Frequently asked questions
Is MeshLab a parametric CAD modeling application?
It focuses on triangle meshes, point clouds and scans, with cleaning, reconstruction, simplification, measurement and conversion. Parametric solids, assemblies and engineering drawings need a different CAD workflow.
What is the difference between 2025.07 and 2025.07d?
The d build uses double-precision floating point and can help with large coordinates or precision-sensitive work. Test it separately and keep its result files distinct from regular-precision outputs.
Can simplification remove texture or important detail?
Yes. The target face count, boundary, normal, UV and texture-preservation settings affect the result. Reduce gradually and compare silhouette, texture and measurement error on a copy.
