What Oxipng optimizes
Oxipng tries PNG and APNG filters, color types, bit depths and compression parameters to reduce file size while preserving the displayed image. Optimization levels 0 through 6 and max trade CPU time for possible savings; level 2 is a useful starting point for a speed and size baseline.
Default lossless behavior has explicit exceptions
The normal goal is lossless optimization, but options can change technical data. --alpha changes the color of fully transparent pixels, and reducing 16-bit channels to 8-bit loses precision. For textures, editable assets, evidence images or scientific material, compare more than the visible result.
Metadata and APNG need a separate review
Safe and full metadata stripping have different scopes. Full stripping may remove color profiles, physical dimensions, EXIF or animation blocks, and an APNG may become a regular PNG. Use dry-run, a separate output directory and representative samples before recursive or multithreaded processing.
