Latest

Latest 0.11 is a macOS application update checker that identifies Mac App Store and Sparkle applications, highlights available versions and supports a controlled, manual maintenance workflow.

Version 0.11macOS x64macOS arm64GPL-3.0

What Latest does

Latest checks macOS applications and helps maintain a list of available changes. It mainly recognizes Mac App Store applications and software using Sparkle update metadata; it is not a universal update platform for every source or a substitute for project-level backups and rollback.

Version and detection boundaries

Version 0.11 covers Intel and Apple silicon macOS packages and supports macOS Catalina and later. A 0.12 beta branch exists separately, so stable installations should record each application's source and version before deciding to update.

Permissions, backups and updates

Results depend on application directories, readable version metadata and system privacy permissions. Save projects, plugins, preferences and license information before an update, then verify each core workflow. App Store, Sparkle and in-app updaters follow different installation paths.

GUIDE

Latest 0.11 installation and macOS update-check guide

Scan a small set of familiar apps first, verify their source and version, and decide on updates one at a time instead of changing the entire work environment together.

Before you start

  • Prepare an application inventory, backups for important projects and records for plugins and licenses.
  • Identify whether each app comes from the Mac App Store, Sparkle or another distribution path.
  • Reserve rollback space and avoid batch upgrades in the only environment used for active work.

Installation steps

  1. 01

    Install and launch Latest

Extract the ZIP, move the app to Applications and launch it, following the macOS prompt to confirm the package source.

  2. 02

    Scan application directories

Let Latest inspect the usual directories, then review application name, current version, update source and support state instead of treating every row as equivalent.

  3. 03

    Decide on updates individually

Back up important application data and configuration first, then open the application's own update path and retain the previous version record for unfamiliar changes.

02

Quick start

  1. 01

    Set update priorities

Handle security and compatibility fixes first, schedule core work applications in a reversible maintenance window and postpone uncertain changes.

  2. 02

    Check plugins and licenses

Record plugin versions, extension paths and license state before updating, and open representative projects afterward to check compatibility.

  3. 03

    Record outcomes

Separate updated, postponed and unrecognized applications, noting versions and errors so later review or recovery has a clear trail.

Usage tips

  • Detection depends on update metadata, so “no update found” does not prove that an application is globally current.
  • Scanning reads application metadata and local directories; system privacy permissions and application location affect results.
  • App Store, Sparkle and built-in updaters have different workflows. Understand the source before applying a batch operation.
Troubleshooting and uninstall

Why does the scan report that it lacks permission?

Check the application directory, macOS privacy settings and current user, test with one ordinary application and only then expand the scan scope.

Why will an updated app not launch?

Quit it, restore the backed-up configuration or previous version, check plugin and system requirements, and confirm that working files were not overwritten before continuing.

  1. Save the update recordRecord updated versions, postponed items and unrecognized applications, and verify backups for important projects and settings.
  2. Quit and remove LatestQuit Latest, remove the application and clear selected user settings if appropriate; installed applications and update records follow their own retention plan.
FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can Latest check every Mac application?

It primarily recognizes Mac App Store applications and applications using Sparkle metadata. Other sources may show limited support or remain outside the list.

Should I back up before an update?

Yes. Save projects, plugins, preferences and license information separately before changing important software; an update checker does not provide project-level recovery.

Why is an application missing from the scan?

Check whether it is in a supported directory, exposes readable version metadata and uses a supported update mechanism. If needed, verify its own update screen manually.
