What MonitorControl does
MonitorControl places external-display brightness, contrast and volume controls in the macOS menu bar or keyboard workflow. Hardware control depends on the display protocol and the complete connection path, including cables, docks and adapters.
DDC, software dimming and HDR
DDC/CI, Apple-native displays, software Gamma, AirPlay and DisplayLink can use different control paths. HDR, sleep/wake, hot-plugging and display re-enumeration can change the available controls, so each display should be tested independently.
Permissions and multi-monitor setup
Keyboard shortcuts may require Accessibility permission. Record each display's connection, HDR state and baseline values before enabling shortcuts or advanced modes. Restore the original configuration when troubleshooting instead of changing several control paths at once.

It is a channel used by a computer and display to exchange control commands. A disabled display setting or an intermediate adapter can prevent it from working.
Why might macOS ask for permission again after an upgrade?
A changed application signature or system version can invalidate an Accessibility grant. Review the entry in macOS settings and grant it again only when needed.
